The trouble with Paolo is that he was all about Paolo. Not a great team player to be honest and that is a view from ex-players.

Re: PDC - was he really all that?
I agree it's down to interpretation of what you think makes a legend. Whether you have to have a calm demeanor and long standing relationship with the club or can be a match winner, explosive, skillful and extremely passionate.
Definately an icon and for me a legend as he was box office and made you excited to go and watch West Ham during a difficult period. He bonded with the fans and always wanted more than the rest of the team could offer. Must of been a nightmare to manage.

I think the title does him a disservice as it suggests he perhaps wasn't that good. He really was that good, sublime skills, balance and wonder goals.

Re: PDC - was he really all that?
By the time Paulo di Canio played for West Ham I had stopped to doing any away games so I never had to suffer his bouts of Northern Flu in person and I only ever watched him at UP.

A virtuoso of a football player, in home games anyway.

Re: PDC - was he really all that?
Agree on the skill bit, but can't on the passion bit, peroni son. Men like Bonzo and Alvin played for donkeys years and took blow after blow for the club without ever going awol during a relegation fight. I know you Italians like to be all demonstrative about stuff, and going awol when there's a fight on, but there's nothing anyone can say that would make me think PDC cared more about West Ham United than someone like Bonzo.

On the skill bit, was discussing with Macca and the fat irish cunt brothers before Christmas, I'd have loved to have seen DEV in this era. A player ahead of his time, for me, did things on shit pitches with hatchet man defenders that people drool over nowadays.

Re: PDC - was he really all that?
Nobody can argue that he scored some legendary goals which will be talked about by not just our support but anyone with the slightest interest in football, but he cannot in my opinion, be even considered close to Bonds, Brooking or Moore. They put the time in, never shirked a trip up north and loved our club . And did it for years and years , not just fleeting glimpses.

Was still great to see at the time though. Jaw dropping at times.

Re: PDC - was he really all that?
It's all about the interpretation of the word legend (actually, it's not according to the OP, but it's become that).

He was all about skill and passion, and he was legendary for both. He was the most skillfull player I've seen at West Ham and no-one was more passionate about the club.

West Ham legend for me.

Re: PDC - was he really all that?
Fantastic player, not even close to being a legend of the club for me

The trouble with calling him a legend is that it would put him on the same footing, the same stature, as men like Brooking and Moore, and to be frank that's absolutely ridiculous.

Re: PDC - was he really all that?
Probably the most entertaining player I have ever seen over West Ham from when I started going in the early 70's.
As someone below said,it was worth the matchday admission just to see him play.

"Legend" is a word used far too often on players who do not merit it but in PDC case it was fully justified.

Not even worth debating.
The man was a genius. Legend and gave me some of my greatest memories following West Ham

Re: PDC - was he really all that?
Quite simply he was worth the entrance fee on his own. Not always brilliant of course, but there was always something he did in a game that lasted with you well after the game.

I consider it a privilege to have been a season ticket holder for a couple of hrs he was with us - pure class.

Up there with Brooking, Bonds, Devonshire, Dicks, Martin, Moore, Hust, Peters, McVennie, Cottee (fuck we've had some brilliant players) and a legend in our club in my view.

The missus got his autograph on the A13 on a match day Saturday when we were in a traffic jam on the way to the ground - a scrawny little bloke but fuck could he play football.

Brilliant.
